The Cecil Hotel Elisa Lam Mystery

The Cecil Hotel and Elisa Lam will forever be connected and shrouded in mystery.

The Cecil Hotel

The Cecil Hotel, built in 1924, was a popular destination for business travelers and tourists during the Great Depression. In the 1980s and 1990s, the hotel became a refuge for drug addicts, sex workers and serial killers including Richard Ramirez. In 2017, the hotel was bought by a group of investors who plan to turn it into a luxury hotel.

Who Was Elisa Lam?

Elisa Lam was a 21 year old Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. The last known sighting of Elisa Lam was on February 1, 2013 at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. In a video released by the LAPD, Lam can be seen pushing all of the buttons on an elevator before exiting and re-entering it while talking to herself and gesturing in hallways. The video went viral and many viewers found it unsettling. Five days after her disappearance, police released footage from one of the hotel's elevators where she could be seen acting oddly for two minutes before leaving again. She had been doing well in school but became increasingly erratic during her travels, at one point being escorted out of a television taping for disruptive behavior. Elisa Lam's blog was titled "Nouvelle-Nouveau," and it was used as a diary.

On the morning of February 1st, Elisa Lam left her hotel in Los Angeles and was supposed to fly to Santa Cruz, California. Her flight was to take place the following day, but she never arrived in Santa Cruz. Her parents contacted the Los Angeles Police Department and they started looking for her.

Police searched the hotel where Lam was last seen and found her belongings left behind, leading them to believe she had not left on her own. The police released a surveillance video of Lam's last known movements to try and find out more about her disappearance. Her body was discovered on February 19th in one of the hotel's water tanks.
